Biography

L.A. Young is a soul, jazz, blues, and R&B vocalist whose voice has been compared to Chaka Khan meeting Phyllis Hyman — a rare blend of raw power and silky emotional depth. A native of Ohio with deep roots in the steel mill communities of the 1980s, she became the first female crane operator in Ohio's steel industry at age 18 before answering her true calling to the stage.

Her career spans landmark stages and elite collaborations: opening for R&B icon Freddie Jackson and recording with members of the Grammy-nominated jazz ensemble Pieces of A Dream. She has performed with jazz legend Norman Connors and is currently in the studio, with her forthcoming music produced by Gold Bottom Productions in conjunction with Norman Connors. Her recording of "No One Can Love You More" — her signature Phyllis Hyman tribute — has earned devoted airplay on independent soul and jazz radio.

Recognition has followed the work — three nominations at the 2018 Maryland Music Awards and induction into the Woman's Basketball Hall of Fame — but the truest measure is the room: sold-out runs of her acclaimed Phyllis Hyman tribute show, venues that book her back, and audiences who leave carrying the night with them. She performs regularly with her band Soul Society and is available for concerts, festivals, corporate events, galas, and private engagements.

The Phyllis Hyman Experience

L.A. Young's flagship tribute concert — a full, living re-creation of Phyllis Hyman's artistry. Not an impersonation: a faithful, deeply-felt staging of the catalog, carried by a rare contralto who can truly sing it and a live band that does it justice. It is the show promoters keep bringing back.

🎭
Authentic & Theatrical
An evening-length production tracing Hyman's life and songbook — creative staging, a real emotional arc, true to the woman and the music.
🎷
Played Live, Played Right
Backed by Soul Society, every arrangement is performed live with the phrasing and dynamics the material demands — a real band a room pays to hear, not tracks.
🎫
A Proven Draw
The show has sold out rooms of 150 to 350 — the right-sized house that fills: full seats, real ticket revenue, and venues that book her back.
