L.A. Young is a soul, jazz, blues, and R&B vocalist whose voice has been compared to Chaka Khan meeting Phyllis Hyman — a rare blend of raw power and silky emotional depth. A native of Ohio with deep roots in the steel mill communities of the 1980s, she became the first female crane operator in Ohio's steel industry at age 18 before answering her true calling to the stage.
Her career spans landmark stages and elite collaborations: opening for R&B icon Freddie Jackson and recording with members of the Grammy-nominated jazz ensemble Pieces of A Dream. She has performed with jazz legend Norman Connors and is currently in the studio, with her forthcoming music produced by Gold Bottom Productions in conjunction with Norman Connors. Her recording of "No One Can Love You More" — her signature Phyllis Hyman tribute — has earned devoted airplay on independent soul and jazz radio.
Recognition has followed the work — three nominations at the 2018 Maryland Music Awards and induction into the Woman's Basketball Hall of Fame — but the truest measure is the room: sold-out runs of her acclaimed Phyllis Hyman tribute show, venues that book her back, and audiences who leave carrying the night with them. She performs regularly with her band Soul Society and is available for concerts, festivals, corporate events, galas, and private engagements.
Maryland Music Awards nominations (2018) — Best Jazz Artist, Best Funk Artist, and Music Icon Award — per the Maryland Music Awards nominee announcement.
L.A. Young's flagship tribute concert — a full, living re-creation of Phyllis Hyman's artistry. Not an impersonation: a faithful, deeply-felt staging of the catalog, carried by a rare contralto who can truly sing it and a live band that does it justice. It is the show promoters keep bringing back.
"She wove a beautiful and elegant tapestry of Phyllis Hyman's life… the smooth, sultry Contralto sounds that made you believe, for just one night, that the Queen was alive and among us."
Every show is tailored to the venue, audience, and occasion. L.A. Young adapts seamlessly across formats.
A separate offering from the Phyllis Hyman tribute production: L.A. Young out front with her live band (formerly The Unusual Suspects), building every set from soul, jazz, blues, R&B and funk — the music hand-picked to fit the room, the crowd, and the occasion, from an intimate lounge to a festival main stage. No two nights are the same.
The band is a lineup of seasoned professionals whose own careers span P-Funk, The Temptations, and the Maryland Entertainment Hall of Fame — individual credits they earned with other artists, brought to her stage.
Additional musicians (keys, bass, drums, percussion) engaged per show configuration. Full band roster available upon request.
"This was not an ordinary tribute show. Ms. Young did not just mimic or imitate Phyllis Hyman. She wove a beautiful and elegant tapestry of Phyllis Hyman's life. Her broad vocal range and expert use of the microphone resulted in the smooth, sultry Contralto sounds that made you believe, for just one night, that the Queen was alive and among us."
